I♥Radio
♥♥♥½
I was recently introduced to this App after complaining about the ad’s on Pandora. This app seemed fantastic at first, it offers a “Discovery Mode” a “Familiar Artist Mode” and a “Mixed Mode” to meet your hipster or Top 100 needs. Between Pandora and LastFm, I’ve found this Internet radio to stay the most consistent with the Station’s Artist. However, it does not offer any stations for any specific genre’s so you’ll have to get by choosing a specific track by a particular artist. I’ve found that tracks by some artist are limited but for the most part, this hasn’t been too much of a problem. The closest thing I♥Radio offers to a genre is a local station stream which completely defeats the purpose of Internet Radio. The band bios need a lot of work as well, they’re short, vague and state only obvious details about the band/artist. The filter still remains the most fantastic though, no curve balls like the time The Pixies popped up on a Velvet Underground station (Last.Fm).

Pandora ♥♥♥♥
Pandora was the beginning of Internet radio for almost everyone. It offers a wide variety of genres, artists, and comedians. It obeys your “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” like a German Shepherd. However, between the ad’s and the randomly placed pop song on just about any stream, sometimes, it’s more frustrating than not. Yet, the database of music still manages to trample most other radio apps. The bios are detailed and most songs offer information about the track itself. The main problem I have found with Pandora is that after about thirty to forty-five minutes, it seems to slowly slide off course causing you to reload the station or choose a different artist/genre altogether. It also tends to jump decades between songs which is extremely frustrating when you’re listening to classical or jazz. Mainly, what I like about Pandora is it’s simplicity and it’s variety of songs and bios.

Last.Fm ♥♥½
Last.Fm ranked number one for me for a very long time. If my computer was on, it was likely on as well. Endless skips, Wikipedia style bios, similar artist ranked from super-similarity to lower-similarity with tons of bands in each category. Last.Fm hosts some of the most obscure bands; from local bands to bands with one song to their name - Last.Fm has it. Buuuuut, it is the least put-together genre/artist maintenance of all, it’s just plain sloppy. You can start with someone likes James Taylor and end up listening to Justin Bieber. Although there are no ads, sometimes it takes forever to load. It’s like opening “Internet Explorer”. As for the Last.Fm phone app, forget it. It allows you 50 plays and then you have to spend money. I still use mine to browse similar artist and obscure genres but the app is basically useless. It’s still limitless from an actual computer but that does me no good at the gym. While it offers the most, it actually gives you the least when it comes to using the stations. You might get 3 good plays out of 15 but you can certainly skip through them as many times as you’d like. As far as discovering bands is concerned, I’ve never found anything like Last.Fm but, they same can be said about using their stations…
